Sagittarius and its Decan Constellations.

Ara

On the Denderah Zodiac in front of Scorpius and below Libra, Ara is an animal like and tailed figure standing up on its hind legs, which is wearing a (Hedjet) white crown of Upper Egypt on its hawk like head and with a raised right hand that is holding either a flail or a vial, which is very hard to see.
Since Ara is seen as a netjeru in a mixed animal form, therefore it represents a mixed force of nature.
As mentioned on "http://home.main.rr.com/ imyunnut/Den.Round.html" by Joanne Conman, "The next figure following the lion is a human-headed hippopotamus wearing the crown of Upper Egypt.    Daressy thought this figure represented the goddess Meshkenet, who insured the safe delivery of a child and who also decided the child's destiny before its birth."
Also see Meskhenet for more on this goddess.

Ara is seen above on the Grand Temple to the right of Scorpius located between Decan 10-11, and is holding up two cup like objects, and not a flail.

One source calls Ara, the "teacher of righteousness."

This may refer to the Lion standing on an altar with the same marking on it as seen in Lupus, which is very similar to those on the tablet seen in Pisces.

Notice that Decan 11 from the Grand Temple does have a flail on his shoulder, and is seen below Scorpius.

This is seen as an Osiris image, the crooked staff and the flail on his shoulder with the Atef crown, which was worn by Osiris, made of the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red feathers represent Busiris, his cult center in the Delta.

Ara on the Denderah Zodiac seems to be out of place as being in front of Scorpius, but is part of Sagittarius as in standard sky lore.    The following are other opinions on what Ara may be.

In "Gospel of the Stars," by Joseph Seiss, page 57, he believes "Ara is the throned human figure wielding the flail, the implement of threshing and bruising, and that figure at the same time is set over a jackal, often identified with the dragon."

This figure he refers to is seen in the image below, where it is above the head of Ophiuchus and Libra.    It is a small figure of a man seated on a throne with his right arm extended and holding an object, which is hard to see, but could be a flail.    This jackal on the circle of Libra would seem more likely to be Centaurus, whereas the small figure of a man seated on a throne could represent Corona (Australis).

In "The Witness of the Stars," by E.W. Bullinger, page 68 "In the Zodiac of Denderah we have a different picture, giving us another aspect of the same judgment.    It (Ara) is a man enthroned, with a flail in his hand.    His name is Bau, the same name as Hercules has, and means He cometh.    It is from the Hebrew Boh, to come."
