Star Names of Centaurus

    The asterism of Centaurus is configured upside down as seen in the night sky.

a Rigel (or Rigil) Kentaurus (sometimes Rigel Kent) is the third brightest star in the sky, has three names, its name Rigel is not to be confused with the Rigel in Orion.    The star's name means "foot of the centaur" ("Rigel" comes from the Arabic word for "foot").
b Agena or Hadar is the Greek and Latin word for "knee."
g Muliphain which is a name originally applied to a star in g Canis Major (which is impossible under Gemini).
d Centauri (no name).

e Centauri (no name).

z Alnair which is Arabic for "bright one."
h Centauri (no name).

q or J Merkent is a contraction from Arabic, meaning "in the shoulder of the centaur."
k Centauri (no name).
l Centauri (no name) is surrounded by the emission nebula IC 2944.

    Other stars not seen are:
f, m, c, i, s, r, and p to round out the 17 stars of Centaurus.
