Star Names of Canis Minor
a Procyon, Greek word meaning "before the dog."
- This star warned the ancient Egyptians of the forthcoming annual flooding of the Nile.
- The Redeemer (Isaiah 49:24-26 and 59:19-20).
- Hebrew ga'al, gaw-al', a primary root, to redeem (according to the Oriental law of kinship), i.e. to be the next of kin (and as such to buy back a relative's property, marry his widow, etc.), avenger, deliver, kinsfolk, purchase, ransom, redeem (-er), revenger.
- In "The Witness of the Stars," by E.W. Bullinger, page 145 "a (in the body), Procyon, Redeemer."
- Other names for Procyon: Elgomaisa, Algomeysa, Antecanis, Al Shamiyyah, Si'air' Sia'mi, Gomei'sa, Gomel'za, Hubor', Halabor.
b Gomeisa, "the bleary eyed," or whose full literal Arabic meaning of the name is "little bleary-eyed one with filth in the corner of the eye."
- Also called Al-Ghumaisa', "the bleary-eyed one."
- Others call it Al Gomeisa, in Arabic means "burdened," "loaded," "bearing for others."
- In "The Witness of the Stars," by E.W. Bullinger, page 145 "b (in the neck), Al Gomesia (Arabic), the burdened, loaded, bearing for others."
- Other names for Gomeisa: Algomeyla, Gomelza, Al chamiz'o, Al Gamus, Algomis'a, Algomis'a, Algomeys'a, Algomeiz'a, Algomiz'a, Algomeyl'a, Algomys'o.
- Ahawat al Suhail ("the two Dog stars").
g Canis Minoris (no proper name).
- Others sources call it Al Shira or Alshemeliya, which means the "Prince" or "Chief of the Left Hand."
- This was seen earlier as a name for the constellation, and a connection with the Hebrew Sar or Seir, "Prince," discussed in Canis Major star names.
- In "The Witness of the Stars," by E.W. Bullinger, page 145 "Al Shira or Al Shemeliya (Arabic) the prince or chief of the left hand, answering to the star in Sirius. On right, the other left, as the two united youths are placed."
- Left.
- Hebrew sema'liy, sem-aw-lee', from Heb. semo'wl, sem-ole', or semo'l, a primary word (rather the same as Heb. simlah, sim-law', cover, garment (by insertion of aleph) through the idea of wrapping up), properly dark (as enveloped), i.e. the north, hence (by orientation) the left hand, left (hand, side), thus situated on the left side, left.
- Right.
- Hebrew yaman, yaw-man', a primary root to be (phys.) right (i.e. firm), but used only as denom, from Heb. yamiyn, yaw-meen', the right hand or side, (leg, eye) of a person or other object (as the stronger and more dexterous), locally, the south and transit., to be right-handed or take the right-hand side, go (turn) to (on, use) the right hand.

- "Al Mirzam, the prince or ruler." (b Mizram is in Canis Major, which is sometimes associated in name by both Seiss and Bullinger as Al Mirzam.).
- "Al Gomeyra, who completes or perfects."
Canis Minor only contains the above 3 stars.
